Family-Friendly Fall Fun in Tokyo!
Family-Friendly Fall Fun in Tokyo!
Every season in Tokyo has its merits, but at CareFinder, we are long-time, big-time fans of fall! The food, the festivals, the foliage — it's wonderful.
And after the grey days of rainy season and the heat and humidity of the summer, the crisp, cool air of autumn is a welcome treat. Simply being outside during this time of year can be enough to enjoy time with your family. However, this is Tokyo, so you know there are many, many family-friendly things to do in the fall!
Koyo: Fall Foliage
Tokyo is more than just a destination for hanami in the spring — it's also a perfect place to enjoy the abundance of reds, oranges and yellows that signal the changing of the seasons. And just like the peak of cherry blossom-viewing, your family should be prepared to encounter sizable crowds at some of the more popular destinations. But a trip to Shinjuku Gyoen, Hama-rikyu, Showakinen Koen or Inokashira (which also has fun paddle boats!) is worth it!
If you want to make an extended visit of your foliage viewing, there are many places across Japan that warrant a trip!
Fun for a Cause
What better excuse for a day or two spent outdoors than in support of a good cause?!
The Tokyo Yamathon is a unique fundraiser for the Yokohama Children's Hospice in which participants, in teams of 2-4, walk the route of the Yamanote line! Success means visiting each of the 30 stops on the route within 12 hours.
Climb Tokyo Tower and enjoy incredible views at the top (not to mention a nice cardio workout!) in support of TELL Japan, an organization dedicated to providing mental health support to Japan's international community. Be prepared to carry up 600 steps! any family members not old enough to climb themselves!
If you're looking for a more relaxing way to give back to the local community, Tokyo River Friends would welcome a volunteer to assist in trash pick-up along the Edogawa or Arakawa on Saturday mornings in the fall! They regularly haul in hundreds of bags worth of garbage, saving it from polluting our lovely rivers.
For Grownups: Oktoberfests
Nothing says "fall in Tokyo" like... Oktoberfest?
While it may be an imported tradition, there is really something to enjoying a pint or two in your coziest sweater (or lederhosen!). And if that sounds appealing to you, you're in luck; Tokyo has numerous opportunities to do so. Some, like Takao and Forest Beer Garden, are actually summer staples, and others, like the World Wine Festival, are less beer-focused. But all are sure to be a good time — just make sure to book a babysitter in advance!
